What’s the best lube for anal sex?

BY ASK AMY

We’ve said it once, and we’ll say it again. There’s no such thing as using too much lube. Especially when the bum is concerned. Your anus isn’t self-lubricating, so using lube (and lots of it) will help make the experience as pleasurable and as safe as can be.

Why is lube important for anal sex?

Unlike vaginas, butts don’t get wet, so you’ll have to arrange that yourself. Not only does adding lube mean you’re in for a more pleasurable ride, but it also makes the experience much safer. Because the anus isn’t self-lubricating, there’s an increased chance of friction-related tears in and around the anus, which can lead to bacterial infections.

What’s the best anal lube?

Water-based lube

Water-based lubes pair well with condoms and toys, but because they absorb into the skin, you’ll need to reapply often.

Our pick is the Adam and Eve Water-based Anal Lubricant, which is specially created for silky-smooth backdoor play and protects your anal area.

Silicone-based lube

Silicone-based lubes are a great option for anal sex because they don’t absorb into the skin as easily, so you don’t have to be reapplying all the time. They also last much longer inside the rectum.

Try the Pjur Back Door Relaxing Silicone-Based Anal Glide formula – it provides long-lasting lubrication for vigorous anal sex and play with larger toys.

But do be careful with silicon-based lube. It doesn’t come out of sheets and clothing very easily, so maybe throw down a towel for this one (you’ll need to wash it off the skin with soap after use). And remember not to use silicone-based lube with silicone toys.

Hybrid lube

Hybrid water and silicone-based lubricants can last longer than water-based lubes but are not as viscous as a lot of silicone-based lubricants. Hybrid-based lubes are long-lasting, while also being easy to clean. A win-win!

Anal numbing lube

There are also desensitising lubricants available, like the CleanStream Desensitising Anal Lubricant, which gives a light numbing effect to minimise any discomfort you may feel during anal sex.

Keep in mind though, that although desensitising lubricants are designed to remove the discomfort some may feel during anal sex, it can make it harder to detect any damage caused during your play (such as tears to the anus). It’s better that you’re able to fully feel what’s happening downtown.

Soap as anal lube

Never use soap or shampoo as anal lube. Most contain fragrances and other nasties that can irritate the sensitive tissue of the anus. Irritation from using soaps can lead to infections so it’s best to avoid them.

Anal lube vs normal lube

Anal lubes tend to be much thicker than lubes used for vaginal sex. They’re designed to last longer, so you don’t need to reapply as often, and because it’s thicker, it provides more cushioning.

That being said, you can use normal lube for anal sex in a pinch. You’ll just need to reapply more often.

How much lube should you use for anal?

Lots…and then some. Make sure to use more lubricant for anal play than you normally would for vaginal play. Use lubricant in foreplay to get extra coverage, reapply during play, and have a towel handy for cleaning up afterwards.

Ready to go?

Our advice would be to try out different types of lube to see what works best for you. Warming up lubricant before it is applied is always a good idea – body temperature is ideal.
