Beginner Friendly Anal Toys

A woman holds a small butt plug with a heart shaped base
Bigger may be better, but when it comes to anal toys? Start small.

You know how it is. You’ve read the ultimate guide to anal play, and expert advice on things you should know, but you open the anal toys selection on Wild Secrets and get overwhelmed with choice paralysis? Yeah. It’s a thing. And that’s okay. Help is here!

If you’re a beginner just exploring your tushy, or a fan of anal sex but are struggling to remember what it was like at the start and need a starter pack for a friend or lover, this guide is for you.

A few quick notes

Before we get started we’re going to be breaking this up into toys for women or clitoris owners, and toys for men or prostate owners. Anal pleasure is going to be different depending which of these you have, although there is some overlap.

For your own safety, please don’t put anything up your butt that doesn’t have a flared base. This includes vibrating ‘prostate dildos’ with long handles. Sure, you or your partner might be holding on to the toy, but you’re one ‘let me grab the lube’ away from an embarrassing X-ray showing up online with your name on it.

We’re also going to assume you’re comfortable with the idea of douching and have decided if it’s for you. If you’re unsure, here’s our guide to anal douching like a pro.

Beginner friendly anal toys for women and clitoris owners

For clitoris owners, anal pleasure is a great way to stimulate the wings of the clitoris – the long arms inside the body. They’re an amazing source of pleasure, and anal toys can rub up against them – especially during penetrative sex. With that in mind, we recommend:

Secret Kisses Rosegasm Butt Bouquet 3 Piece Anal Training Set

The Bloomgasm Butt Bouquet is a great beginner
If you’re going to put something in your booty, it might as well be something as pretty as the Secret Kisses Butt Bouquet.

Yes I chose these because they’re cute and have roses on them – and anything that you think is cute and pretty will help you feel more relaxed about trying anal play. And you want to be relaxed. These are great for beginners because you get multiple sizes, so you can start small and find the right size that feels good. And it’s okay if that’s not the biggest one. I also want you to get a silicone plug. They’re softer and gentler on you, which is a must for beginners, and are non-porous, unlike some other soft plugs that yes, can harbour bacteria even after cleaning. Trust me, get the silicone.

If you’re on a tighter budget and don’t want the rose look, try the Wild Secrets Dare set instead.

Adam & Eve Triple Stimulation Joy Rabbit Vibrator

The Adam and Eve Triple Stimulation Joy Rabbit is a rabbit vibe - with the added bonus of anal beads.
If you know you like rabbit vibes and are keen to explore anal toys, the Triple Stimulation Joy Rabbit is a good option to start with.

A rabbit vibe? Really?

Yep. Here’s the thing – anal beads aren’t for everyone. Some people really like them, others find they don’t do much. Other times it completely depends on the anal beads, but we’ll get to that later. With the Joy rabbit vibe, you get all the fun of the rabbit vibrator and the chance to try the vibrating bead attachment. So if it turns out you don’t like it – you still have a functioning toy you can use and enjoy. You can even let the beads brush against your anus externally and get all the fun of stimulating your backdoor nerves without having to let it go inside you.

For the budget friendly option, there’s the Dual Penetration Vibrator, but that one doesn’t come in silicone, unfortunately.

b-Vibe Beginner’s Vibrating Butt Plug

The bVibe Beginners Vibrating Plug is an anal toy designed for booty novices.
Yes, the name says it all. But the b-Vibe Beginner’s Vibrating Plug does live up to it.

b-Vibe are very much the brand when it comes to all things butt stuff, and their Snug Plugs are loved by anal toy experts. So if you know you love all things vibrating, you can’t go wrong with their vibrating butt plugs. Vibrating plugs help stimulate all the sensitive nerves in your anus, but will also target the clitoral arms from behind with some extra vibes. Try combining them with the G-spot vibe or partner of your choice.

For a more budget friendly option try the Satisfyer Plugilicious 1. Yes it has a man on the box, but it’ll work just as well for you too.

Pipedream Stay Put Adjustable Strap On Harness

The pipedream Stay Put beginner
The Stay Put harness is a great beginner’s option as it’s affordable you can use it with a lot of different toys.

If you’re looking for pegging suggestions, you need a good harness. And the Stay Put harness by Pipedream is my top pick. It’s affordable, has a comfy neoprene backing, and has an O-ring design so you can use whatever dildo you want. I recommend the Wild Secrets Desire Dildo as a good starting point, but this is a beginner harness that will still be useful years down the road if you find you love it. If you want an all-in-one option you can try this Pipedream Harness with a 6″ dildo, but I’ll take neoprene over nylon every time. For transmasc guys who want a more gender conforming option check out the Strap U Boxer Briefs.

Why no strapless strap ons? Because they’re actually harder to use. To keep them in place you have to really squeeze down. If you have super strong kegels, then go ahead and grab our Joy Strapless Strap On. Otherwise, you can look at the Double Penetrix or Dual Motor Strap On for something that stimulates you while you penetrate your partner, just be aware that you can’t swap out the toy with a different dildo down the line.

Beginner friendly anal toys for men and prostate owners

Okay guys, here’s where it gets real – your joy button is inside your butt and toys are some of the easiest ways to get to it. Fingers work to a point, but the contortion required to get to your own prostate can be cramp inducing. And not particularly easy to hold during a wank sesh. For reference, your prostate is a few inches inside the anus towards the front of your body, and should feel like a slightly firmer area inside of you. On some guys it feels like a walnut. On other guys it feels like a slight divot. Either way, you’ll know it when you find it. It’s intense – and intensely good.

b-Vibe Hither Plug

The Hither Plug is an butt plug with an extended, curved tip designed to stimulate the prostate.
The Hither Plug from b-Vibe is the perfect beginner anal toy for men and prostate owners.

The Hither Plug is a modern take on the basic, non-vibrating prostate massager. It’s like the OG Aneros, just in silicone, perfectly shaped and gentler on your prostate. It’s small enough to be easy to get in, and shaped right to help you explore prostate fun. If you’re looking for a good place to start before investing in a vibrating option – this is it.

If you need something even more budget friendly, the classic prostate massager shape is available here.

Svakom Vick Remote Controlled Prostate Massager

The Svakom Vick Prostate massager and remote control.
You can’t see it from this image, but the Vick’s internal arm rotates a full 180 degrees. This means you can adjust it to fit your body better. And hit your prostate just right.

The Vick Prostate Massager sits solidly in the mid-priced vibrating prostate massager, but has a few features that are seriously great for beginners. First is the rotating shaft that is great for helping you get the right fit and position for you. The second is the remote control. Any form of remote or app that means you can adjust things without reaching behind or under yourself? Bliss.

If you’re after a more affordable option, the Adam & Eve Triple Probe is a waterproof, vibrating, silicone option. Alternatively, if you  grab our Wild Secrets Wonder on sale you’ll get a prostate massager with an adjustable outer arm to get the right amount of perineal stimulation for you.

Satisfyer Air Pump Booty 2 Inflatable Anal Vibrator

The Satisfyer Air Pump Booty 2 is an anal vibrator with the longest external stimulator in the range
The Satisfyer Air Pump Booty 2 is my pick of the range for men looking for an anal toy.

Satisfyer’s Air Pump Booty range of vibrators are designed for anal play. The main difference between them is size, but the 2 has the biggest flare at the base and the nub can provide some external stimulation for a prostate owner. That plus the fact that you can start small and then inflate the inner arm makes it a good choice for a beginner’s anal toy for men. One of the biggest challenges is relaxing enough to really enjoy anal play, and an inflatable vibe helps with that. You can get it in small and pump it up once it’s inside you, which is a win in my book.

Beginner friendly anal toys for all bodies

There are a few great anal toys that can be used by anyone, regardless of sex and gender identity, so here’s a couple of our favs.

Satisfyer Booty Absolute Beginner 4 Vibrating Butt Plug

The Absolute Beginner Butt Plug from Satisfyer has a big base and small tip - so it just stimulates your anal opening.
If you like the stimulation of the nerve endings down there but don’t want to really to in – the Booty Absolute Beginner Plug is the choice for you.

If you want to start small with a dedicated vibrating butt plug, grab yourself something from Satisfyer’s Absolute Beginner range. They’re some of the smallest vibrating plugs available and are perfect if you’re worried your eyes might be bigger than your butthole. They’ll also let you know if you enjoy vibrations back there. If you have another vibrator you can always tease your anus with that for a similar effect. But if you’re just starting our or want to keep your anal toys separate from everything else, this is a good pick.

Curious Candy Birthstone Butt Plugs

An honourable mention has to go to this range of Birthstone Butt Plugs – there’s one for every month and are the perfect beginner’s size. They are metal, so are a bit more intense than the anal trainer sets above. But they are part of the Wild Secrets Free Gift program. So if you’re already buying something and just want to throw this in to give anal toys a try, you can get it for free.

They also make great gag gifts, especially around Christmas if you’re planning ahead.

Wait, what about anal beads?

Okay, remember when I said anal beads weren’t for everyone when I talked about the rabbit vibe? Yeah so anal beads are a toy that I’ve found to be less universally enjoyed by people who like anal stimulation. So if you’re just starting out, maybe try something else first? Also I don’t find the budget friendly, non-vibrating anal beads to be very user friendly. They’re either for inserting and removing slowly, and tend to be very big, or are meant to be pulled out during orgasm to heighten the sensation. And that’s really hard to do solo. You’ll have more luck if your partner’s involved, but again, it’s not for everyone.

One thing I will say is that the cheaper, jelly/TPE anal beads can feel like nothing at all and not in a good way. So I’d suggest the GreyGasms 14” Silicone Anal Beads if you want to give this a try. They’re small enough to be relatively easy to insert, but being made of firmer silicone, they’ll give you more stimulation on the way in and out. The varied sizes will also help there. Just remember you don’t have to put them all in every time.

The Lelo Soraya anal beads are a great anal toy - if you like anal beads.
If you do decide to try vibrating anal beads, try inserting them slowly and experiencing them at each depth. You may find you like three balls, while four is too much.

I absolutely rate the Lelo Soraya Anal Beads for partnered fun. But if you’re just starting out, consider the budget friendly 7” option from Calexotics. Or this 4 piece set from Adam and Eve that gives you a range of bead sizes to try.

Go forth and explore…

At this point it’s safe to say anal’s gone mainstream. And with it has come a boom in anal toys available for purchase. But I hope this gives you an idea of where to start. If you’re looking for something specific, by all means have a browse. But generally, look for silicone both for a softer sensation and ease of cleaning, and go smaller rather than larger. You can always level up to that glass plug or giant size when you know it’s what you want.
